Movie Review- Thor Ragnarok

Time for the Thor Ragnarok review I promised. In order to save time from now on I'll be doing my reviews by listing the pros and cons and then some last thoughts for the review.

Pros

  • Get to see Thor and Hulk team up together
  • Got to see many characters from the comics like Surter, Hela, Fenris, Skurge, Korg, Meik, etc...
  • Actual magic being used by Hela and Loki. Magic was something the MCU really tried to shy away from for a really long time even with Dr. Strange and Scarlet Witch, but this time it seemed like actual magic was being used by Hela, Loki whose magic was previously limited to only illusions can now do some other stuff like mind reading, casting a spell to start Ragnarok, mind-warping spell used on Odin, in addition Thor recalls a flashback during childhood where Loki transformed into a snake, and also later turned him into a frog, both references to the comics.
  • Thor himself is referred to the actual 'god of thunder' and Hela as the 'goddess of death' , with Thor's abilities being cleared up as not originating from the hammer, but rather the hammer being a tool to channel his power.
  • There were a couple really good easter eggs like how in the palace there are giant faces of the previous champions including what looked like Beta ray bill, Swamp thing, and Ares (I'm really hoping the Olympians join the MCU, in fact Thor's club looked like Heracles' from the comics)

Cons

  • Way too much stuff going on in this movie- two big comic book story lines Ragnarok and Planet Hulk, and way too many characters which leaves less room for development. A total of FOUR villains - Hela, Surter, Skurge, and Grandmaster...
  • This honestly felt more like a Guardians of the Galaxy movie than a Thor movie...
  • Way too much comedy in Marvel movies these days I don't mind with Spider-Man cause its Spider-Man, but GOTG 2 was way too cartoonish with wayyyy too much forced humor (just watch the honest trailers for this one). This is exactly what happened with this movie- I keep thinking why I didn't think the movie was too funny after it ended then I realized the two main reasons. 1st- it was way too much , every 3rd line was a joke or awkward silence being humor, 2nd- it was predictable , the jokes were predictable when you see where the joke is headed the punchline isn't as funny- ie Valkyrie falling off while walking down, Hulk beating up Thor when he tries to calm him down, Banner falling on his face after jumping down, etc... all predictable and therefore unfunny...
  • I honestly didn't really like the Valkyrie character, too much forced diversity in these movies, I'm not racist but idk why black people complain about having little representation when they have more than all the other races other than white. White characters cast as black- Heimdall, MJ, Mordo,Valkyrie, etc...  great actors but sometimes it just doesn't make sense. Heimdall and Sif are literally siblings. The Asgardians are supposed to be white where it was even joked about in the comics, they later added a character that was 'asgard's greatest warrior' that was black but come on more PC crap... I'm all about representation but there is a difference between representation and pandering... I can't wait to see Black Panther looks amazing and there it actually makes sense... Apparently though the Valkyrie who died saving her was the Brunhilde one , but it doesn't matter cause this one is gonna be the main one anyhow.
  • Didn't like how Loki was portrayed. The whole point of Loki's character is Thor is a reckless idiot who doesn't deserve the throne while Loki is the clever diplomat who is more suited for the throne. For some reason after he gets what he wants and is king , he turns lazy and everything falls to pieces?!?! what!?!? How does that make sense?? Loki isn't that kind of character... Also as I've said above glad Loki is using more magic now but its nowhere near his level in the comics, Dr. Strange easily beats him in this movie without trying yet in the current comics Loki defeated Strange and is the current sorcerer supreme. Was always kinda sad how the literal 'god of mischief' was reduced to only being able to do illusions...
  • Korg's also a cool character and while funny wasn't like his comicbook counterpart at all.

Overall not bad, loved the beginning which felt much more like Thor, not a huge fan of him getting a new look and losing his hammer though...
